The Northern Healthy Communities Partnership and the Northern Intertribal Health Authority helped to support the development of tobacco lesson plans through the collaboration efforts of the Northern Tobacco Strategy Team and the Northern Saskatchewan Breathe Easy Team. These classroom ready units and lesson plans were developed by a teacher from a Northern Saskatchewan School for use in our communities and are designed to be incorporated into the Health curriculum. The lesson plans for Kindergarten to Grade 3 are now available for download on the NHCP website (in addition to the Grade 4 to Grade 9 lesson plans previously posted).
These lesson plans aim to integrate evidence about effective school-based interventions to reduce commercial tobacco use among students. Using these lesson plans in your classroom could help improve the health of your students while also meeting curriculum outcomes. By linking tobacco information with Saskatchewan’s curriculum in these plans, classroom teachers can provide accurate information about a critical health issue in northern Saskatchewan as part of their regular work, meeting goals of the health and education systems at the same time and supporting the development of a healthier school environment.
Subscribe with your email when downloading the materials to be notified of any future revisions to the lesson plans and supporting resources, as well as for future feedback surveys to help us improve these resources.
Please share these lesson plans with fellow educators to help them plan their year and meet their curriculum more easily, all while supporting the development of a healthier school environment!
